Here is a list that might start to get you thinking on different ways you and your school can start to better support students and create a more safe, accepting environment.
Ask pronouns. Don't be afraid to ask students pronouns, and if they don't know what pronouns are, tell them! Different pronouns include he/him, she/her, they/them, or students may ask if you can just use there name. If you use the wrong pronoun for a student, don't make a scene, politely apologize and move on. Trust us when we tell you, students don't want you to make a big deal when you get their pronouns wrong, think of it like calling them wrong name.
Ask students what curriculum they 'd like to see in your class, maybe someone is really interested in african american history or queer inventors, you would never know without asking. By asking them your acknowledging that their interests matter and are making their education cater more to their passions and interests, something that's key in a students education.
Be understanding. If a student gets offended by something you say, don't be angry. Ask them if they would like to explain why they were upsetted by the comment and learn from it. The best thing teachers can do to support their students is learn from them , as well as being understanding and open to new ideas .
